Credit counseling group offers mortgage help

Register staff writer Mary Ann Milbourn reports…

The National Foundation for Credit Counseling, a longtime nonprofit counseling service, has launched a website and telephone hotline to help homeowners in trouble on their mortgages.

The website features the Mortgage Reality Check, which includes a quiz to help homeowners determine how dire their situation is. The results are conveniently color-coded from green (you’re doing fine) to red (get thee to a housing counselor right now!).

Certified housing counselors are available through the website or a toll-free hotline, 866-557-2227.

Other, more general, homeowner information is also provided, like what paperwork you need on hand to discuss your mortgage with your lender, how to hire a contractor and issues you need to consider in financing home repairs. There is also advice for would-be homeowners.
